Overview

Now in its 8th generation, the former gentleman’s curling club has seen a radical shift in programming over its 130 years. Shiftingravity answers members’ call for expanded services, introducing a new, accessible entrance and atrium, child care centre, youth activity area, gym and fitness studios. The result is a more modern, family-oriented and forward-thinking facility better positioned to meet changing trends and demographics.

The architectural challenge of the addition was to redress the dark, monolithic appearance of the existing building by refocusing program spaces outwards and embracing the Club’s beautiful ravine setting without compromising day-to-day programming. A sweeping entrance drive leads through a garden to a large porte-cochere. Rotated 90 degrees from the existing entrance and sheltered by an elegant canopy, the porte-cochere offers framed views through the lobby and out to the valley beyond. The newly defined L-shaped plan creates an impressive courtyard that overlooks the ravine and offers a picturesque venue for athletics and social events. The extensive use of glazing throughout enhances the sense of fluidity and transparency between the built and natural environments while rich materials like the copper entrance canopy, together with modern facilities and beautiful sequences reinforce the Club’s reputation as a distinguished destination. The addition is LEED Gold Certified. Full of natural light, fresh air, connections to the outdoors and range of sustainable initiatives, Shiftingravity truly embodies memberships’ interest in health and wellness.
