Montgomery Sisam is excited to announce the University of Toronto Koffler Scientific Reserve has been awarded the 2021 WAN Gold Award in the category: “Future Projects-Education”.
The awards recognize the outstanding works of visionary and imaginative architects worldwide. The project was bestowed this honour due to its ambitious sustainability targets and its innovation.
The Koffler Scientific Reserve is a major venue for research and instruction in ecology and environmental biology. Modelled after a university quad, it is comprised of sleeping and bathing quarters, a refectory, living areas and teaching spaces. The project is targeting net-zero-carbon, net-zero-energy performance, and LEED Gold certification. This robust sustainability mandate is met through passive design strategies that minimize energy use, while offering year-round comfort to users.
