“The Paul Oberman Award recognized the project for inspiring civic beauty, upholding the urban aesthetic and for its high architectural integrity”
This project incorporates an early 20th century industrial building now capped by a steel and glass extension and framed by a series of townhouses. The original, three-storey, red brick book-binding factory sits on a spacious lot in a vibrant section of Carlaw Avenue. The industrial character of the old building, including the classical main entrance portico and handsome lobby are maintained and rejuvenated. The deep lot which reaches east to Boston Avenue allows for ample landscaped courtyards, evoking the architectural qualities of an English Mews. “The result is a project that pays homage to its industrial heritage and which speaks a thoroughly contemporary architectural language.”-Christopher Hume, The Toronto Star Joint Venture with Chandler Graham Architects and Designers.
