“A valuable opportunity to revive underutilized space, re-imagine its use and maximize its potential”

Humber College continues to improve students’ experience and meet students’ growing expectations for quality student environments. In the context of the larger campus, where square footage per student is low and there is a lack of informal spaces for students, the redevelopment of the Amphitheatre as the new Student Federation Plaza is a valuable opportunity to revive an underutilized space, re-imagine its use, maximize its potential and further the College’s commitment to providing more and higher quality spaces dedicated to informal study, collaboration, and socializing.

Having established a successful working relationship with Humber College, Montgomery Sisam holds a holistic understanding of and appreciation for North Campus and the vision to which it aspires. Seemingly modest alterations offer important visibility, accessibility and usability to the existing space. Previously unexploited connections, physical and visual, are generated between the plaza, student centre and cafeteria to encourage greater student traffic. Calculated re-grading along with the creation of defined, active edges offers the space unprecedented definition and diversity of use.

On the east side, the relocated canopy structure is combined with a new stage to provide a performance area that also doubles as a covered patio for everyday use. The west edge is outlined by steps that double as seating, and includes an area with picnic tables under the shade of tree canopies. The south edge is defined by a tall hedge, providing a green back drop to the plaza and keeping the loading area hidden from view. On the north side is a prominent new entrance to the Student Centre, connecting to both levels via a new interior feature stair.

This project is deeply invested in crafting a dynamic space that attracts, engages and works for students. Here, quality amenities enhance the every-day student experience, creating a quality campus environment beyond programmed and instructional spaces.
