Eastern Gap Bridge

“playful, light-on-the-earth, beguiling design”

The 300 metre span connects 500 acres of mature parkland, in the existing waterfront trail system between Niagara and Kingston.

The delicate, elegant and unobtrusive bascule bridge is capable of opening a 100 meter wide navigable gap in less than one minute, for the use of tall masted ships, high speed ferries or lake freighters.  Inspired by the bone structure of the east bittern, an extinct migratory marsh bird that once bred in the marshes at the site, the design is reminiscent of two birds facing one another, Lisa Rochon of the Globe and Mail describes it as a “playful, light-on-the-earth, beguiling design.”  The bridge “celebrates the raw pleasures that exist at the waterfront” and provides “startling ways to connect people to inspired public space.”
