Integrating Mental Health Treatment with Mainstream Care: A New Specialized Mental Health Rehabilitation Program facility for St. Joseph’s Hospital

Montgomery Sisam is pleased to announce the construction of the new Specialized Mental Health Rehabilitation Program facility at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Thunder Bay is now underway.

Today, the mental health program is located on the Lakehead Psychiatric Hospital site; it is plagued by aging infrastructure and an outdated model of care. Moving the program to a new home on the St. Joseph’s Hospital site, is a critical attempt to de-stigmatize mental health treatment and reintegrate it within mainstream care.

Montgomery Sisam in collaboration with local Architects, FORM Architecture Engineering, began the design of this new Specialized Mental Health Facility in 2006 as part of a larger, multi-disciplinary long term care and healthcare project to create a dynamic Care Community committed to supporting, nourishing and enriching lives across Northwestern Ontario.

The new Specialized Mental Health Facility provides a dedicated, dignified environment for vulnerable individuals. Design solutions have been carefully crafted to meet all technical, technological, and sustainable operating requirements while also providing for the more intangible qualities of place that best support healing and wellbeing.

On Monday, June 15th, Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne attended the official ground breaking ceremony for this much anticipated new facility. Substantial completion in expected by May 2017.
