Extendicare Maple View achieves LEED Silver Certification

Extendicare Maple View is a 256-bed long term care facility located in the heart of a dense woodlot in the city of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.  Inspired by the aesthetic of a traditional grand hotel, the building maintains a strong residential character while meeting all program demands.

Extendicare Maple View features many amenities that support a home-like environment, including a fireplace lounge, café, salon services, two outdoor courtyards, terraces and a chapel.  In addition, 24-hour nursing and personal care is provided, and residents have the option of private or semi-private rooms with a shared washroom.

Completed in June 2013, the facility has now achieved LEED Silver Certification.  The design uses many water conservation and energy efficiency strategies, including using dual flush toilets, native plant species that do not require irrigation systems, LED lighting throughout, and an innovative exterior wall system that substantially reduces thermal bridging.  The design team also collaborated with Extendicare’s facilities management engineers in the selection of systems and equipment to better balance the capital and on-going maintenance and life cycle costs.

Extendicare Maple View offers natural daylighting and plenty of views to the outdoors, so residents and staff can interact in a healthy, relaxing environment.  The long term care home also provides controllability of systems, and is designed with low emitting materials, which improves and enhances the quality of life and health for seniors.
